“Research is increasingly revealing that clamping the umbilical cord prematurely, before two or even three full minutes have elapsed, robs your baby of much-needed blood and oxygen.”

I just read this, too. Timely for me. ;) I’m hoping to convince the o.b. not to cut the cord right away. Not the kind of birth I was hoping for, but God had other plans.

With our last 2 babies (number 3 and 4) we left the cord intact for an hour after birth (both were homebirths). It was amazing. Both babies lost ZERO weight from birth, actually gaining an extra pound by their 2 week checkup. Both had ZERO jaundice (my first 2 babies both suffered from jaundice). They are my healthiest 2 babes, wonderful appetites, etc. I made the choice simply b/c it seemed more natural, and I thought, if the cord blood is such good stuff, why not let my BABY have it? But it was interesting to read this article and the mechanics of the lung function, too. -Robyn
