“The Blind Side” defending the cause of the poor and needy
Derek and I went on a movie date on Friday night to watch “The Blind Side”. We really appreciated the Christian testimony of the Tuohy family, and the perseverance and talent of Michael Oher. It is touching to see people extend love to those in need, especially fatherless children.
“He administers justice for the fatherless and the widow, and loves the stranger, giving him food and clothing.” Deuteronomy 10:18
“Because I delivered the poor who cried out, The fatherless and the one who had no helper.” Job 29:12
“‘He defended the cause of the poor and needy, and so all went well. Is that not what it means to know me?” declares the LORD.” Jeremiah 22:16
“Defend the cause of the weak and fatherless; maintain the rights of the poor and oppressed. Rescue the weak and needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked.” Psalm 82:3-4
“Do not oppress the widow or the fatherless, the alien or the poor. In your hearts do not think evil of each other.” Zechariah 7:10
“Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.” James 1:27
Then last night, we enjoyed Mike Huckabee’s interview with the real Tuohy family. One thing that surprised us was when they said that their friends were very open to Michael. We got the impression from the movie that their friends were very racist. Collins Tuohy said, “My friends were very open to Michael… They were very sweet to him, and we all got along really well. His friends were always welcome in our house because our house was his home. My friends were the same, and we all got along really well.” It seems to be very insulting to their friends when the movie portrayed them as racist. Of course, racism certainly exists in this world, but Hollywood doesn’t have to create it where it didn’t exist.
