I’m not Catholic and neither is the author of the post at the link below, but it sounds like something I might try. Today is the first day of Lent. Hmmm… What is one controlling influence I could give up for forty days? Facebook? Junk food? Television? Maybe a little of everything?
The Opportunity of Lent
Update: I am curious to see how abstaining from the following things that I perceive as generally negative will impact the quality of our family life. It is time to rein in some of these negative influences.
- Two children are giving up junk food (unless it is the main course).
- One child is giving up television (unless the show is a new family movie or a new “The Middle”). (This will mean everybody gives up television!) and video games (except for Saturday morning).
- One child is giving up iPod and television (and that is the 17-month-old LOL).
- I am giving up Facebook (logged out and deleted it on iPod and computer), soft drinks (Even though I abstained for about fifteen years, I have recently been drinking Coke 1-2 times per week), chocolate, junk food (unless it is the main course), a big chunk of websites in my Google Reader, shows I have set to record in my PVR (except for two), FOX News (unless I hear about world events that would affect me)… If it were not for significant health breakthroughs, I would not be able to commit to these things.
