Homeschooling Grade Two
Our first academic goal for grade two is to make certain the child has a thorough foundation in phonics, can read, can write, and has memorized the addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts. Usually by the second grade, reading takes off, so the door is suddenly wide open for a future of independent learning.
Included here is a sample checklist of a grade two student who works independently most of the time. We have also listed the collection of curriculum and materials we may use at some point during the second grade. Some of these subjects, especially the 3 R’s, are done everyday, but some subjects get neglected in real life. Over the course of the entire year, the child gets a very well rounded and balanced academic education.
To make the materials more organized, we divide them into two bins - the “reading” subjects (Bible, History, Health, etc.) and the “writing” subjects (Grammar, Penmanship, Math, etc.)

The “plan” for grade two is listed above. I have added the following personal notes about my second child when he was in grade two.
Shortly after beginning grade two, B turned seven and began the Saxon 5/4 (grade5/grade4) Math book. He finished it the following May at 7 2/3 years old. He was so excited that he started Saxon 6/5. Throughout the year, he taught the material to himself, and did the problems independently. He occasionally asked me a question, but my answer usually involved him reading the lesson again.
I was also thrilled with his appetite for books. He learned to read with the ABeka phonics program. At age six (close to seven), when I knew he was almost ready for chapter books, I read a Bobbsey Twin book aloud to him. It only took the first chapter to get him hooked. When he realized he could read almost every word on the first page, he was off! He proceeded to read every Bobbsey Twin book we had, and those we managed to win on Ebay. Then I read aloud a Boxcar Children’s book, and he quickly read all that we had, as well as those available from the library. He received some Magic Tree House books for Christmas, and breezed through those because they are so easy. He enjoyed Encyclopedia Brown, as well as many other great children’s books.
