Homeschooling Grade Three

Included here is a sample homeschool checklist for a grade three child who works independently most of the time. We have also listed the collection of curriculum and materials we may use at some point during the third grade. Some of these subjects, especially the 3 R’s, are done everyday, but some subjects get neglected in real life. Over the course of the entire year, the child gets a very well rounded and balanced academic education.

TYPICAL DAY IN GRADE THREE

This is what homeschooling looked like on a typical day for my second son when he was in the third grade. Some days included additional educational activities.

He keeps a stack of school books at the end of his top bunk for early morning and bedtime reading. He loves to wake up early to get a start on his school work. Shortly after six, he chooses to read a few pages from his books for each of these subjects: Geography, History, Canadian History, Bible, Science, and Literature. Just this morning, he happily told me that he finished a book on Roman History, and he also read ten extra pages to finish his Geography book. He uses post-it notes to mark his places in each book. Most of the time, he enjoys learning the material, sometimes reading further than expected.

When he gets out of bed, he gets his own breakfast which usually consists of a bowl of raspberries. He then hauls his Math textbook and notebook from under the sofa and completes a Math lesson lying in front of the warm fireplace. He marks and then does the corrections for his Math lesson. In a few days, he will start Saxon Math 7/6 (average grade 7, advanced grade 6) at the age of eight in grade three. This can happen with any child if they get in the habit of self-teaching at a young age.

Each school day, he goes up to his desk, and independently completes a page from his Language workbook and two pages from his Grammar workbook. He also fills a half page with Creative Writing. Last fall, he did Penmanship, but his handwriting has improved, so we got rid of that subject for now. He also did Typing and extra Facts Practice last term.

He loves the fact that he usually has a lot of work done before the rest of us even get up at 7:30 or 8:00. When his brother is finally ready, they listen to a chapter from a Bible cassette, and they silently pray.

Sometime during the day, he listens to some songs on his Geography CD, participates in a Latin lesson on DVD, and does a Music lesson on DVD.

Later in the day, I call out his Spelling words and Vocabulary words and ask him a couple Catechism questions. I hold up his Latin flashcards for him to pronounce and define the words. I also call out Oral Language Exercises and ask him a few Calculation Drills.

He works hard to finish school work early so much of his day is free to play video games, read books, play MegaBloks, Lego, K’nex, or army guys, play with his siblings, and/or go outside.

Many afternoons, B8, C5, and L2 work on a craft or art activity on the kitchen table.

I read aloud to him in the afternoon and/or evening. We are almost finished reading Eldest.

He brings great joy to our family with his giggles and dimpled grin (missing his two front teeth, by the way). Our homeschooling lifestyle gives him a relaxed and happy childhood with the added perk of a superior academic education.

The “plan” for grade three is listed above. When my second son was eight years old, he read all of the following books in grade three. There are likely some missing, especially ones we borrowed from the library and books that were below his reading level. There were also many books he started to read, but did not like. He is encouraged to give them a three chapter chance before he dumps them.
