Homeschooling Kindergarten K4
Children are different. Some may be ready to read at age four while others won’t be ready for a few more years. As a parent, you are in the best position to determine if your child is ready for “academic” subjects at the pre-kindergarten level. You may want to concentrate on reading aloud to the child, teaching colors and shapes, and perhaps introducing numbers and letters. If you have lots of time and your child is ready, you may want to do much more. Either way, your child is NOT behind. The following is a homeschool checklist as well as a collection of curriculum and materials that may be used at some point during the K4 year.

ARITHMETIC
Our plan for arithmetic is explained here. We want the child to learn some basic arithmetic skills (numbers, counting, calendar, telling time, place value, measuring, fractions, money, geometry), and most importantly, to have the math facts completely memorized by the time he is between 7 and 8 years old (first or second grade), so he can begin Saxon 5/4 (Robinson curriculum style).

PHONICS
Our plan for reading is explained here. The child begins with phonics (letter sounds, names and pictures, alphabet, capital and lowercase letters, vowels and consonants, blends, one-vowel rule, sounding out one-vowel words, special sounds, two-vowels rule, sight words) and sometime during the first or second grade, we want the child to learn to read chapter books.
