Homeschooling Kindergarten K5
Children are different. Some may be ready to read at age five while others won’t be ready for a couple more years. As a parent, you are in the best position to determine if your child is ready for “academic” subjects at the Kindergarten level. You may want to simply concentrate on reading aloud to the child, teaching colors and shapes, and perhaps introducing numbers and letters. If you have lots of time and your child is ready, you may want to do much, much more. Either way, your child is NOT behind. The following is a homeschool checklist as well as a collection of curriculum and materials that may be used at some point during the K5 year.

ARITHMETIC
Our plan for arithmetic is explained here. In 1st grade, we want the child to continue to learn arithmetic skills (numbers, counting, calendar, telling time, place value, measuring, fractions, money, geometry), and most importantly, to have the math facts completely memorized by the time he is between 7 and 8 years old, so he can begin Saxon 5/4 (Robinson curriculum style).

PHONICS
Our plan for reading is explained here. The child begins with phonics (letter sounds, names and pictures, alphabet, capital and lowercase letters, vowels and consonants, blends, one-vowel rule, sounding out one-vowel words, special sounds, two-vowels rule, sight words) and sometime during the 1st grade, we want the child to learn to read chapter books.
