Homeschooling Reading

(Pre-Kindergarten through Grade Nine)

The goal is to teach phonics and have the children practice reading until they can read chapter books independently by age seven (or 7½). Learning to read with phonics is crucial. First, parents help children learn to recognize and memorize the sounds and names of letters. Then come blends and special sounds. Throw in a few sight words and off you go!

Children begin reading little phonics books and eventually, slightly more advanced books like Danny and the Dinosaur and Sammy the Seal. They need to have access to lots of books that interest them. When I can tell that my child is almost ready to graduate into chapter books, I will begin reading a Bobbsey Twins book aloud. They are so interested that they want to finish it on their own. In my opinion, Bobbsey Twins books are absolutely the best beginner readers I have ever seen. Children find them so exciting and can hardly wait to start the next chaper to follow the mystery. The words are a perfect introduction to chapter books. We have a large collection that I saved from my childhood, and we bought lots more on EBay.

Once children can read, please let them read. Feed books to your children just like food. Get books below their level, at their level and above their level… picture books, chapter books, fiction, non-fiction, comic books, magazines - ANYTHING that interests them. I don’t worry about fluff books, because I think the more practice, the better.

Soon, children are able to read books about different subjects on their own - Bible story books, history books, science books, etc. This material can be understood without someone sitting beside them going over paragraph after paragraph. Reading is what education is all about.

Reading aloud to children continues to be a significant factor in education. Here are some more factors that I believe contribute to the development of a successful reader: phonics, home education, large home library, stacks of library books that need two people to carry them home, parents reading in the home, expressions of appreciation for literature, less TV, etc.

The books in the following lists are MY CHOICES.

There could be any of several reasons why the books are included.

1. We already own them
2. They have been recommended in homeschool catalogs
3. They have been recommended by people I respect
4. Books my children happened to choose during a particular grade
5. Financial considerations
6. Library availability
7. Child’s Interest / Child’s Gender

I divided the following books according to grade, but feel free to ignore those boundaries if your child is not at the exact level. Some children are simply ready to learn to read at age four while others need a few more years. You can pick and choose or make your own lists. While I might have placed a book in a grade three list, it could just as easily be read in the second, fourth, or even fifth grade.
